5 valuable lessons that you learn out of the classroom at university
There is no doubt that learning a skill or trade at university is extremely valuable, but the fact of the matter is that most of the learning during this period in life is done outside the classroom. It's important to learn as much as possible during this period of time because this is the point in time where boys become men and girls become women. People who go straight into the workforce instead of studying at university miss more than just the lectures from professors, and the value of living on your own with your peers for the first time is sometimes difficult to handle. Let's take a look at the five main lessons that people learn while they enter their first year of university.
Lesson #1: The concept of debt
One hard lesson that many young students learn while they are at university is the concept of debt. Getting a student credit card is easy but be mindful of the responsibilities. Many students find themselves in a mountain of debt after they graduate because of their student loans, and those problems are not to be taken to another level by a bunch of credit card debt on top of that. This is definitely a time when young people can learn about spending money they don't have, but you should always be careful about the kind of limit you get on your first credit card. Although you probably think that you will be able to use the card wisely, the fact of the matter is that the kids who go deep into debt have that same mentality when they get their first credit card.
Lesson #2: How to budget
This is something that should actually be taught at a much younger age, but the reality of the situation is that most students do not know how to budget their monthly allowance once they have reached university. Most parents will still provide their children with money while they are at university, but they should make sure that they limit the amount of money that their children can use. The only way a young person will be able to learn how to budget their funds is if they are put into a situation where they actually have to set money aside for food, shelter, clothes and other items during the month.
Lesson #3: How to meet new people
Most young people stick with their own cliques before they get to university, but this provides an opportunity to meet new people and learn how to accept other people's differences. Most young people are basically forced into situations where they have to talk to new people when they go to university, and this is definitely a good thing. This is basically the period in life where people can come out of their shells and learn more about the world around them.
Lesson #4: The true value of friendship
University is sometimes the place where people learn who their real friends are and how to actually value friendship more than anything else. There will always be situations that pop up where someone needs someone else to back them up or get them out of a situation, and that's when someone learns who is really there to help them out in life.
Lesson #5: Parents aren’t all that bad
When university students are able to learn about how much work it takes just to survive in the world, they gain a new appreciation for their parents. Some young students will even apologise for being as spoiled as they grew up over the past 18-20 years.
At the end of the day, university life is the first step that a person takes into the real world.
