Student case study: Lancaster University

When I was choosing a university, Lancaster really stood out to me for a few reasons. The rankings and the fact that it’s so well-known for my course definitely mattered, but it wasn’t just about that.
I loved that it’s a proper campus university with the collegiate system and so many societies, because it felt like there would always be a sense of community and things going on. The location was a big plus too, it’s close to bigger cities like Manchester and Liverpool, but still small enough to feel safe and familiar.
That was important to me because it made the move feel a lot less overwhelming and a lot more welcoming. Overall, it just felt like a place where I could grow academically and actually enjoy my uni experience.
Being Indian and Hindu, I’ve really enjoyed finding both a cultural and religious community through the societies here, which has been so comforting and fun. At the same time, university is the best way to meet people from everywhere, not just through societies but just through day-to-day life, lectures, and hanging out on campus. I have loads of friends from different countries and cultures, and the exposure is honestly one of the best parts of uni.
When choosing my accommodation, having a private bathroom was really important to me, and price was also a factor, I wanted somewhere that felt comfortable but still reasonable.
What I love most about living on campus is how alive it feels while still being so easy to get around. It is like a little self-sufficient world where everything you need is close by. I love the green spaces and all the walks whether I am listening to music alone or wandering with friends.
One thing that really makes my accommodation feel like home is also including postcards from my travels here and mementos of my university life. It’s a reminder of the life I have built here, and it makes me super happy!
My advice would be to try to be open to the experience and make the most out of growing into your own person here. Lancaster is really diverse, so take the opportunity to meet people from different cultures and countries – you’ll learn so much from hearing different perspectives and experiences. Get involved in societies, college activities, and events, because that’s where you’ll make friends and start feeling at home.
